The Syracuse Orange triumphed over the Ohio Bobcats 38-22 in their season opener on August 31, 2024, at the JMA Wireless Dome. Though Ohio took an early lead with two field goals by Gianni Spetic, Syracuse quickly found its rhythm. Ohio dominated the first quarter but was held to field goals due to Syracuse's red zone defense. Meanwhile, quarterback Kyle McCord shook off a shaky start, overcoming early near-interceptions and leading his team on several scoring drives. By halftime, the Orange led 17-9 after key touchdowns by Oronde Gadsden II and Trebor Pena.
In the second half, McCord continued to exploit Ohio’s secondary, finishing the game with 354 passing yards and four touchdowns. Wide receiver Trebor Pena was particularly impactful, tallying two receiving touchdowns and a rushing touchdown. Ohio's Anthony Tyus III delivered a stellar performance, rushing for 203 yards and two touchdowns, but couldn't single-handedly keep pace with the Orange’s scoring. Despite a late surge from Tyus and a strong defensive effort from Ohio’s Bradley Weaver and Austin Brawley, Syracuse's relentless offense sealed the game. This victory marked the first win for new head coach Fran Brown.
